Spreading the word

Article Abstract:

The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently exhibiting work by Craigie Horsfeld, Simon Patterson, Douglas Gordon and Gary Hume, the shortlisted artists for the 1996 Turner Prize. Patterson is involved with Word Art, while Hume practices a type of disenchanted, ironically detached Pop Art. Horsfield's black-and-white pictures are not totally effective, while Gordon exploits the rather sinister effect that can be produced from slowing down a film. The exhibition also includes a video detailing how each work evolved.

That way madness lies

Article Abstract:

The best work of young British artists is exhibited in the 'BT New Contemporaries' exhibition at the Cornerhouse in Manchester in Jun 1993. It demonstrates free speech, but self-expression reveals how banal people can be. Neo-Surrealism is popular; it is easy to execute and weird. Art students are encouraged to shock and be unconventional. Stuart Morgan, one of the three selectors, explains in the exhibition catalogue that he feels good artists need to be deranged.

On the surface

Article Abstract:

The exhibition entitled 'About Vision: New British Painting in the 1990s' which is currently being held at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England, is not intended to have a unifying theme. It brings together the work of a number of young artists, and gives no single view about which works are most important. Artists whose work is exhibited include Fiona Rae, Jane Harris, Glenn Brown, Marcus Harvey and Callum Innes.
