Standing up to be counted

Article Abstract:

Richard Cameron, drama teacher, began writing musicals for his students in 1979 and in 1991 he gave up teaching to write full-time. His 'Can't Stand Up For Falling Down' was successful at the National Student Drama Festival and the Edinburgh Festival where it won 'The Independent Award' for 1990. The Royal National Theatre Studio is co-producing 'Pond Life' at the Bush Theatre, London, England. He finds it best to work in the garden shed and has to structure his day to consolidate his planning and thinking.

In the eye of the storm

Article Abstract:

Playing the part of Prospero in Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' brings considerable responsibility, according to actor David Calder. He regards this as Shakespeare's most extraordinary play, with the actor being required to really think as Shakespeare did. He feels that the part needs constant analysis, and he has spent many hours thinking about the play's complexities. He has had to draw on his own experiences, and playing Prospero has been a very personal journey.

Gift of the gab

Article Abstract:

Playwrights should have the confidence to stand up for their work and not make excuses for it, according to Martin McDonagh, who has recently attracted a great deal of positive criticism at the age of only 25. His first play, 'The Beauty Queen of Leeane,' has won three awards, and is now being performed at the Royal Court theatre in London, England. He wrote the entire play in only eight days, but this is actually a very deep play.
