Stars urge Indians to come clean over taxes

Article Abstract:

The Indian Income Tax Department's Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme, which operated during the second half of 1997, has been particularly successful in encouraging people to declare previously undeclared income. Only 1.26% of the Indian population is assessed for tax or files tax returns, with only 12,000 people earning more than 15,000 pounds sterling a year. Until recently, it has been quite socially acceptable to not pay income tax and to not feel guilty about this. However, extensive advertising by the Tax Department has brought in almost 900 million pounds sterling in tax.

Could this banana be straighter? Do mussels get enough fresh air? Does our chocolate have the right fat?

Article Abstract:

UK food manufacturers and importers have for many years been attempting to come to grips with European Union directives. In recent times, legislation relating to issues such as how curved bananas should be has been receiving negative publicity. In some cases, there is clear reasoning behind directives relating to food, but others seem to have little point. It is now time to focus on following the spirit of directives on food, rather than trying to meet their terms exactly.
