Steward, rabble-rouser, statesman: John Prescott's rise above self-doubt
Article Abstract:
UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has become more confident since late 1996, and is now beginning to be widely respected. He has until recently felt inferior to other leading members of the Labour party because of his lack of formal education, and has on occasions believed that he was being excluded from key policy-making meetings. He even went as far as making party leader Tony Blair put in writing a commitment that he would become deputy prime minister if Labour won the 1997 general election. However, his political performance has improved as his self-doubts have waned.

The trials of the loyal servant
Article Abstract:
Labour party deputy leader John Prescott has clearly found it very difficult to remain loyal to party leader Tony Blair following moves by the latter to support the decision of Harriet Harman to send her son to a selective school. He already had an uneasy relationship with Tony Blair, and this issue would have brought the relationship to the point of collapse if Prescott had decided to voice his opposition. He will not openly oppose Tony Blair as long as the Labour party remains ahead in the opinion polls.
