Stop Murdoch now or regret it
Article Abstract:
UK politicians seem to be conspiring to ensure that ordinary people do not become aware of the fact that ultimate control of broadcasting will shortly fall into the hands of Rupert Murdoch. BSkyB is set to launch a new digital service in Oct 1997, offering access to around 150 channels, as well as services such as home banking and shopping. In taking this approach, Murdoch is showing that he remains around two or three years ahead of his competitors. Many observers feel that he will rapidly come to dominate television broadcasting in the UK.

Rupert Murdoch is weeks from conquest
Article Abstract:
It appears increasingly likely that television broadcasting in the UK will soon by entirely in the hands of Rupert Murdoch. He is negotiating an alliance with BT, banks, retailers and manufacturers, and is soon to go ahead with production of an initial 150,000 set-top boxes which will allow users to receive digital television. He will be required by European law to allow other broadcasters to use his system, but he will ensure that he will be able to compete strongly against these broadcasters' scheduling.

Will Parliament resist Rupert's grip?
Article Abstract:
The UK government claims that it is taking all possible action to ensure that Rupert Murdoch does not obtain a monopoly on television broadcasting with the digital boxes which BSkyB is now having made. However, it has not yet taken the key step of making it compulsory for Murdoch to franchise his technology to other broadcasters. If this does not happen, then there will be severe dangers for the future of free television broadcasting in the UK.
