Stormy past of the Windy City

Article Abstract:

The 1968 Democratic party convention in Chicago became the focus for riots which were quelled violently by the police. This led to the defeat of the Democratic presidential candidate, and thus to the election of Richard Nixon. The party believes that this disaster has now been forgotten, and feels confident enough to hold its 1996 convention in Chicago. Indeed, the party which was in such a perilous position when it came to Chicago in 1968 may now prove the party of victory.

Paul Warnke

Article Abstract:

Lawyer and public servant Paul Warnke was born in Webster, MA, in 1920. He studied at Yale and served in the Atlantic and the Pacific during the second world war. He became one of the leading critics of the Vietnam war from within Lyndon Johnson's government when he was Assistant Secretary of Defense.

Jeremy Wallington

Article Abstract:

Publisher and television producer Jeremy Wallington was born in Watford, England, in 1935. He worked on a number of publications before joining the Sunday Times in 1963. He moved to Granada Television in 1967 to set up an investigative unit.
