Stressed out Blissed out U.K

Article Abstract:

Depression has become increasingly common in the UK, and now one-third of adults will take anti-depressants at some time. Indeed, it seems that society as a whole in the UK actually promotes depression. Lewis Wolpert, who explores depression in his book 'Malignant Sadness,' points out that rates of depression are rising particularly fast in young people, and claims that this could be attributable to cultural trends such as the collapse of traditional family life. Research supports the view that both men and women find it hard to adapt to new patterns of parenting.

The parent trap

Article Abstract:

Creating and nurturing children should in theory be a very natural process. However, in modern society this process has become associated with many challenges, with a strong danger of failure and recrimination. Parents who employ a nanny to care for their children often feel guilty, and there is a risk of the relationship between the nanny and the parents breaking down if it is put under pressure. It seems that many men and women simply do not have room in their lives for families or children.

Now that's entertainment

Article Abstract:

Documentaries have begun to set very low standards for television broadcasting in the UK. They make serious incidents, such as attacks on aircraft crew by passengers, into mere entertainment, and seem to glorify drunkenness, rudeness and violence. The most trivial subjects, such as the lives of hotel guests, are now being turned into documentaries, and the documentary format is constantly being extended to reach into new areas.
