Striking a blow against Europe
Article Abstract:
The recent announcement by French prime minister Alain Juppe that government expenditure is to be reduced, especially in the health, welfare and security systems, has struck a deep blow to ordinary people's expectations of medical care and secure jobs with very good retirement prospects. The present crisis with strikes and demonstrations has arisen from this, especially as Juppe has been keen to do everything at once. Some observers believe that the French government's attitude is partly an attempt to show how much the European Union depends upon France.

A day for France to face its ghosts
Article Abstract:
President Francois Mitterand of France has decided after much pressure that Jul 16 will be a day of national commemoration of the day French police began arresting Jews living in Paris and sent them to the gas chambers in Auschwitz. Police documents about the Vel d'Hiv operation were destroyed in 1948 and 1949 and the matter was suppressed. Chief of Police Rene Bousquet was tried for genocide in a mock trial and lived a comfortable life until publicity in 1978. He was assassinated by a madman on Jun 08 1993.
