The only noises I could hear were in my head

Article Abstract:

A mother in her twenties describes her self-delusion when she began to go deaf. Eventually she visited a specialist who diagnosed otosclerosis, a bone disorder which vibrates and transmits sound in the middle ear. Lip-reading slows down conversation and makes it difficult to eat at the same time. It is difficult to maintain a normal voice and pronunciation. An operation, stapedectomy, is 90% successful, but risks total hearing loss.
