Supermarket giant will be a financial minnow
Article Abstract:
The UK's high street banks and building societies could face considerable problems if plans by supermarket chain Sainsbury's to link with Bank of Scotland to form a bank are successful. However, experience indicates that retailing and banking do not necessarily go well together. Furthermore, Sainsbury's is also creating a centralised telephone banking operation, an area where there is already very strong competition. Sainsbury's has many retail customers, but there is no evidence that these people will necessarily use the company's banking services.

Old Lady told to change her ways
Article Abstract:
Senior money-market people criticise the Bank of England's management. They consider it had inadequate tools to cope with the ERM crisis, during which it had to bypass its specialist discount market because of the scale of demands. It had to supply emergency funds directly. Germany and the US alter money-market dealing rates without affecting mortgage and other lending rates. The Bank of England could have a similar official policy, anchoring mortgage rates, and use flexible dealing rates.

Funded pensions may feed bears when baby-boomer bubble bursts
Article Abstract:
The widely-held view that countries which fund their pension schemes are in a much better position than those which do not could prove misguided. Indeed, funding could cause long-term problems, creating a long bear market early in the 21st century which will lead to a dramatic decline in the value of funds. Particular problems could be caused as retiring baby-boomers begin to liquidate their savings.
