The mystery of Mr Barak

Article Abstract:

A great deal is expected of new Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. He has set himself challenging targets, including putting an end to the dispute in the Middle East. His political career has progressed rapidly, but Israelis are still confused about what he really believes. He has benefited greatly from having former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an opponent, but he must now prove that he can govern effectively and resist the temptation to be authoritarian.

Barak may leave Golan settlers high and dry

Article Abstract:

Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak has committed himself to reaching an agreement with Syria allowing Israel to retreat from Lebanon with 12 months. In return, Syria seeks the Golan Heights, captured by Israel in 1967. Syria has welcomed the election of Barak, but will negotiate over Lebanon and the Golan at the same time. The Israeli settlers on the Golan are generally not convinced that an Israeli withdrawal will take place.
