Taking a 'what's-sauce-for-the-goose' approach
Article Abstract:
The Law Society is trying to persuade law firms to introduce practice management standards, regularly giving staff training and appraisals but there is considerable reluctance to do so. The standards will remain voluntary except for firms wanting a legal aid franchise. The intention is to improve service quality and to remove the haphazard management methods so prevalent in solicitors firms. Staff are required to be given job descriptions, recruitment is required to be systematic, and induction training, evaluation and appraisal are advocated. Profit related pay might be introduced on the back of these changes.

Training the advice squad
Article Abstract:
Criminal defence procedure should be undertaken in police stations, but police station advisers are often untrained clerks. From Oct 1994 the Legal Aid Board will pay legal firms for advice given at police stations if the advisers are accredited. The role is perceived as low status, but it is crucial to the first stage in the defence process for the client. The adviser should have a strong moral base, assertion skills and a grounding in basic human rights.

Solicitors tread where the police fail to go
Article Abstract:
It is very uncommon for defence lawyers in England to approach prosecution witnesses before a trial to determine what they are likely to say in court. Instead, they rely on cross-examining witnesses at committal. However, this will change with the abolition of old-style committals later in 1995. Solicitors will then have to interview witnesses in some cases, and will use witness statements supplied by the police.
