Talk, don't shoot, in Somalia

Article Abstract:

Twenty thousand UN troops from 27 nations were to start rebuilding Somalia, but local fighters began a guerrilla war against the UN. Some aid agencies are unable to get UN military escorts as they are afraid. The UN operation appears to pursue General Mohamed Farah Aideed. Admiral Howe believes the only option is to arrrest General Aideed. US troops in Somalia are expected to cost $1.3 billion in 1993. The UN peace-keeping budget of $2.8 billion includes $159 million for Somalia, of which only $20 million has been raised.

'A place, no longer a city, of complete madness.' (Somalian civil war)

Article Abstract:

Civil war in Somalia has forced people to leave their homes, has filled Mongadisha's hospital and is likely to cause famine and cholera when the rainy season comes. The war between two Hawiye sub-clans, the Habar Gedir and Abgal, started when Siad Barre was ousted in 1991, now involves the Murasad and other sub-clans, all of them armed with rockets, guns and tanks. Relief workers from charities work in fear of their lives and the Red Cross has armed guards.

Mogadishu hospital is gateway to hell

Article Abstract:

The civil war in Somalia has killed thousands of people, and hundreds of dead arrive daily at Mogadishu's hospital. It is estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 people have been killed in the civil war between General Aideed and Ali Mahdi and their sub-clans. About 200 casualties arrive daily at the Banadir Hospital in Mogadishu and its burial grounds are already full from those they have been unable to save.
