Thatcher feared De Lorean backlash

Article Abstract:

There were very sensitive political issues behind the decision of the government of former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher to support the 70 million pounds sterling De Lorean car plant in west Belfast, Northern Ireland. The government feared that abandoning the loss-making venture would serve to further alienate nationalists in Northern Ireland. It was also aware that abandoning the venture would make it difficult to justify continued financial backing for the Harland and Wolff shipyard and British Leyland.
