The British way of working: high employment but low productivity

Article Abstract:

The UK is considerably above the European Union average in terms of labour input, but is significantly below the European Union average in terms of productivity. GDP is around $23 per person hour, compared with the European Union average of $29, and on this basis the UK ranks 13th in the European Union. Low productivity in the UK is attributable to poor skills training, as well as to insufficient investment in physical capital and research. The UK's economic position would be greatly improved by raising productivity by 25% to the European Union average while retaining current working hours.

Celebrate Cool Britannia, but don't ignore the rust

Article Abstract:

It is important to remember that the UK's economy is not performing as well as some media coverage and official statistics indicate. Unemployment seems to have fallen, but many people are not covered by the unemployment statistics. There has been a genuine expansion in creative industries, but the bulk of UK industry is still performing badly. It is true that economic prosperity will in future be based on the success of intangible activities such as finance. However, there is still a lot of basic repair work to be undertaken on the UK economy.
