The Glory of Mr Swinson

Article Abstract:

Dealing with members' interests must be the priority issue, according to Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales Pres Chris Swinson. The institute must find ways of serving more effectively the needs of the many different types of people who hold the qualification chartered accountant. It is for this reason that it is being split into directorates dealing with discipline and professional conduct, members' interests and education and training. It is important that the institute acts in such a way as to remind its members that they should act in the public interest.

When big drops coalesce, does this herald the start of a deluge? The little drops would like to know

Article Abstract:

The planned merger of accounting firms Coopers and Lybrand and Price Waterhouse could have a range of implications. Some observers believe that this deal would make a link-up involving Deloitte Touche more likely, for example, while others believe that Andersen Consulting may link with one of the other leading accountancy-based concerns. It is almost inevitable that there will be changes in staff at the leading accounting firms in the near future, with senior accountants being in very great demand.

Getting away from the apprentice attitude

Article Abstract:

Accountancy firms no longer recruit those trained by big firms as those with Chartered Institute of Management Accountants or Chartered Association of Certified Accountants qualifications are preferred for their survival skills and broader experience. Grant Thornton specialise in advising owner-managed businesses so takes on less trainees but intends them to become partners in seven years. More basic tasks are given to accounting trainees, who may transfer later.
