In a bleak room, in a nondescript semi, in a faceless suburb, a girl shut herself away for 14 years

Article Abstract:

Karen Morgan, who died in Apr 1996 at the age of 29, lived as a recluse at her parents' home in Erith, England, from the age of 15. She had previously received psychiatric treatment, but her parents were unwilling to let her attend a residential school, so decided to care for her at home. She was able to dominate the family, even though she never left her almost completely bare bedroom. Social workers were unable to take action, as there was no evidence of her being neglected or ill-treated.

The London schoolboy who turned Republican terrorist

Article Abstract:

The UK Police Complaints Authority is to ascertain whether three IRA members who have been convicted of planning a large bomb attack on London, England, wish to assist its investigation into the shooting on Sep 23, 1996, of Diarmuid O'Neill, a fellow IRA member, by police. The Anti-Terrorist Branch claims that O'Neill was part of an active unit intending to cause extensive damage. He had already served a jail sentence for defrauding the Bank of Ireland, with the money having gone to the IRA.

Sectarian 'plague' revisits community

Article Abstract:

The tension in Northern Ireland has been increasing, with the breakdown of the ceasefire, and there is renewed sectarianism. According to a politics lecturer from Belfast's Queen's Univeristy, it seems that people had continued to feel antagonistic, but had restrained their feelings until the ceasefire broke down. Local newspapers are receiving a lot more correspondence, which is indicative of the strength of feeling, and there has been a lot of exasperation over the events in Drumcree.
