The Look that shocked the world

Article Abstract:

The House of Dior's first collection, which was shown in Feb 1947, had an enormous impact on the world of fashion. There had been little scope for using large amounts of fabric and elaborate designs during the second world war, but Dior took a completely new approach with The Look, which was based on long, full skirts and tight waists. There was a strong emphasis on feminity, and the collection gave a clear signal that wartime austerity could now come to an end.

The groupie's guide to Cannes

Article Abstract:

The annual Cannes film festival attracts many people who have no professional connection with the film industry but simply enjoy the atmosphere. Some are successful in talking to leading actors or directors and in getting invited to parties. The best approach is to find the bar where producers and film executives are drinking, as these people can often introduce fans to the stars and obtain invitations to beach parties.

A vision of civilised concrete

Article Abstract:

Architect Tadao Ando is extremely well known in his native Japan, and is now starting to gain international recognition, having recently received the Pritzker Prize. He is respected even outside architectural circles, especially for his unique vision. His buildings tend to have a very strong sense of silence and majesty, and are most easily recognised by their concrete plaques.
