Article Abstract:

The Open University already has a strong international presence, and is now set to enter the US, with state legislatures in California and Florida having voted funding for their university systems to work with the Open University to set up distance learning programmes. Florida State will initially offer the Open University's new masters programme in open and distance education under licence, but will soon also work with the Open University to run the final two years of a four-year course in computer science, information technology and communications, and liberal arts.

Welcome to the new world of Disney degrees

Article Abstract:

Higher education institutions in the UK must be aware that they are set to face growing competition from innovative new ways of delivering higher education. This trend is already taking place in the US, where the University of Phoenix, for example, already has 48,000 students studying for vocational degrees through new distance learning techniques. Some observers believe that the UK's higher education institutions should now consider joining together to offer Internet MBAs, nursing courses and law degrees.
