The Rev Raymond E. Brown was a biblical scholar famous for his studies of St John's Gospel. He sought to reach lay people as well as scholars through his writings. He was born in New York, and studied at John Hopkins University following his ordination, later becoming a fellow at Jerusalem's American School of Oriental Research. He was able to study the Dead Sea Scrolls in Jerusalem. He was supported by the Vatican, though some conservative Catholics criticised his views.

Catholicos Karekin I, 131st head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, was born Neshan Sarkissian in 1932. He entered the seminary of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1946, and was ordained a deacon in 1949. He was ordained a celibate priest in 1952, entering the religious brotherhood of the Catholicosate. He studied theology at Oxford University, England, from 1957 to 1960, and was an observer at the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965.
