The big issue? Safer streets

Article Abstract:

The support expressed recently by UK Labour party leader Tony Blair for the 'zero tolerance' policies being used by police against homeless people in certain parts of London, England, has attracted considerable controversy. Some observers believe that such an approach violates civil liberties, but these are generally people who do not really have any experience of street life. It is certainly right to make people feel safer on the streets, but 'zero tolerance' may not be the best way of going about it.

Complacency under fire

Article Abstract:

Introducing a total ban on handguns would not be effective in preventing disasters such as the Dunblane massacre and would be very expensive, according to six MPs who formed part of a House of Commons committee investigating this issue. Their views were not shared by the five Labour committee members, who had wanted handguns to be banned. Many observers believe that the government has been unduly influenced by the gun lobby.
