The case of the racist kidneys reveals a sickness in the NHS

Article Abstract:

The case of a donor kidney being accepted by the Northern General hospital in Sheffield, England, on the basis that it would be used only for a white patient raises some serious issues about racism in medical care. It can be argued that the family of the donor had a right to dictate what happened to the kidney. However, the rights of black and Asian staff in the National Health Service, who are often victims of racism, are not taken into account. There is clearly a need to establish more carefully exactly how much say people can have in institutions offering essential services.
