'The controls jumped out of his hand at 4,000 feet. It was every pilot's nightmare.' (pilot Ray Cockerton)(Interview)
Article Abstract:
Having controls which do not respond is a terrifying situation for a pilot, according to Captain Ray Cockerton, who found himself in this situation when piloting a Boeing 757 carrying 241 passengers and crew. The crisis was made worse by poor weather conditions which made it impossible to make an emergency landing. It was decided to continue the flight to the UK, where an emergency landing was made at Manchester airport. It was found that an engineer had left a torch in the wing of the plane, thus jamming the aileron.

Departing BR boss sends a warning signal
Article Abstract:
Some of the 25 train operating companies which will become responsible for running services after the privatisation of the railways will collapse within a few years, according to Sir Bob Reid, outgoing chairman of British Rail. There could be mergers and amalgamations, but there will probably be no line closures in the early stages of privatisation. However, in some cases it will prove more cost-effective to replace rail services with buses.

Non-confrontational, helpful and flexible, no wonder women are the modern employer's first choice
Article Abstract:
Women now account for 48% of the UK workforce, and it is likely that they will soon account for more than half. Employers are tending to favour women over men because women offer attractive characteristics such as the ability to cooperate and to avoid confrontation. It is now becoming increasingly common for men, rather than women, to complain to the Equal Opportunities Commission about bias in job applications.
