The danger of being too bullish

Article Abstract:

Shares on the UK stock market achieved a total real return of 23.6% in 1997, as measured by the All Share index. The bull market has been very firmly established since 1980, as during that time there have only been two years when the All Share index has declined. Similar growth has been seen in the US. However, it is important to be cautious about stock market performance. Gains are not evenly distributed across all publicly quoted companies, and longer-term interest rates are still on a downward trend.

How Craig was locked up at the court's convenience

Article Abstract:

The recent case of Craig Charles, who was acquitted after spending three and a half months in prison on remand, highlights the problems with the system of remanding defendents. A magistrate must decide whether to remand a defendent before any details of the case have been discussed, and need give no justification for his or her decision. Everything is done in private, and the defendent has no right to be present. It is clearly time that drastic changes be made to this system.

Investments

Article Abstract:

There were a considerable number of people who won various multiple bets on extremely long odds as a result of jockey Frankie Dettori recently winning all seven races on the card at an Ascot race meeting. Nobody who seriously wishes to make money from betting on horse races would place a bet at such long odds, but it is clear that this does not apply to amateur gamblers, who are prepared to take risks with outsiders and horses which are not favourites.
