The daring budding of May

Article Abstract:

American poet and novelist May Sarton, who is over 80, has published over 40 books. Her work depicts the pain and pleasure of being elderly, with no distressing enfeeblement. When she was 25 she met Virginia Woolf and became Elizabeth Bowen's lover. Some of her novels deal with how to live honourably and warmly in a cold world. Her poems have not been printed in the UK since 1939, but are being published for her 81st birthday. Her poems treat ordinary subjects as sacraments.
