The earth now needs smarter friends
Article Abstract:
Environmental organisations have made great progress over recent years, moving out of obscurity and into the political and social mainstream. There are now large volumes of national and international environmental legislation, and environment departments have a considerable influence over governments in many countries. However, the environment is still under great pressure, and many difficult decisions remain to be made. Environmental organisations will have to consider new approaches, being willing to cooperate and to solve problems rather than simply protest about them.

Blood of forgotten thousands stains birth of new nations
Article Abstract:
The partition of India, with the creation of the Muslim state of Pakistan, had a devastating impact on the country. Strong divisions among communal and religions lines emerged, and the army, which had fought as a united force during the second world war, also became split. Partition involved large-scale migration, and the army was unable to prevent intercommunal violence breaking out. For these reasons, celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Indian independence will inevitably be tinged with irony.
