The future is blurred

Article Abstract:

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is becoming increasingly common across the world. It is a particular problem in the Far East, where in some countries more than 90% of university graduates are sufferers. Some observers believe that the growing prevalence of myopia is attributable to the modern lifestyle, which brings demands for close work. It is also possible that exposure to nightlights as a small child induces physical changes in the eye or that myopia is an evolutionary inevitability, with the eye adjusting to changing circumstances.

The mother of all battles

Article Abstract:

Penny Mansell was determined that her son Sam, now aged 11, would not be placed in care, even though he was severely handicapped after his birth was badly managed. She recalls that she encountered a very negative response to her efforts to care for Sam, and that he was two years old before any real help was offered. She was often made to feel guilty for requesting help, and feels that health and social services professionals have never really understood what she has had to endure.

When can we breathe easy?

Article Abstract:

Scientists are almost certain that asthma has a genetic element, but there is still no convincing evidence regarding environmental factors. A growing number of researchers are now investigating diet as the most likely cause of the significant rise in the number of asthma sufferers since the 1970s.
