The gloom boom

Article Abstract:

The present singer/songwriters of popular pathos are finding it difficult to produce second albums as appealing as the first. Almost exclusively female, these writers and singers appeal mostly to the angst ridden white teenagers and twenty year olds of the middle classes. Record companies once perceiving them as too left wing, are now promoting them heavily but not appreciating that the writers themselves may develop and move on in style, as will the tastes of the present fans, which makes a first album difficult to emulate in style and sales.

Capitalism helps stir India's old prejudices

Article Abstract:

Surat, India is a city of growing prosperity but its future was disturbed by the demolition of a mosque in Ayodhya, which resulted in the deaths of 182 people in Surat. Five days of arson by a Hindu mob destroyed factories in Dec 1992. The Gujarati trading community with the name Patel abounds in the city but 70% of the population are immigrants. Social scientist Ghanshyam Shah suggested that the Hindu-chauvinist political party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was involved.
