The grown-up game of tagging

Article Abstract:

Tagging of offenders is being used in the UNited Kingdom where over 500 offenders have been tagged and over 80% of these complete curfew orders successfully. Tagging is used by courts where an offense is serious but there is little risk of it happening again. It is also used by lower courts for repeat offenders. There is concern that tagging could be misused, since it cannot be a substitute for tackling factors that encourage offending such as the need for offenders to obtain employment or deal with debts or relationships.

'If I'd been sent back to prison, I would have died.' (Sheila Bowler acquitted of murder of elderly aunt)

Article Abstract:

Sheila Bowler admits that she was very naive to have believed that it would be impossible for her to be found guilty of the murder of her elderly aunt in 1992. In fact, she was convicted of the murder in Jul 1993, and served four years of her minimum 12-year life sentence before the conviction was overturned. It was established at the retrial that her aunt could have walked unaided in the direction of the river in which she drowned. Spending time in prison greatly shocked Bowler's middle-class sensibilities.

Life with the lawyers

Article Abstract:

Working as a barrister or solicitor can bring very mixed experiences. Most barristers and solicitors work very long hours, and can find their work very stressful. They feel that there is a great deal of bureaucracy, and this can sometimes prove frustrating. However, they also report that they enjoy the variety of their work, and that they welcome the many challenges which they are obliged to face.
