The house that Pierre built

Article Abstract:

Pierre Boulez retired from the directorship of the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM), the music wing of the Pompidou Centre in Paris, in January 1992 after 15 years. IRCAM's aim is to renew the sound materials and composition concepts of contemporary music with composers and scientists. Its main success was the 4X super-music-computer. The new director is Laurent Bayle. Current research is in room acoustics and the Musical Work Station which has real-time synthesis and sound transformation. Bayle will work with younger, mainly European composers such as Philippe Manoury and Frederic Durieux who work in collaboration with dance, opera and film. New policies will embrace the human sciences of music: musicology, ethnomusicology and sociology of music.

The house that Gabrielle built

Article Abstract:

Building your own house can become tedious once you have learned the basic approaches, according to Gabrielle Saunders, who built her own house on the Diggers self-build development in Hollingbury, Brighton, England. The project took her two years, even though she gave up her job in order to be able to devote more time to it. The houses, designed by architectural firm Architype, have many environmentally-friendly features. These include pillars and posts stained with natural, non-toxic tree oils and beeswax polish on the timber floorboards and panelling.

The house that we built

Article Abstract:

Turning to self-build can be an appropriate way of overcoming negative equity. If a self-build project is carefully planned and managed, it can result in a house which cots around 20-30% less than the cost of buying a similar property. This approach is now being viewed more positively by lenders, and around 25 now run special schemes for self-builders. It is vital to select good suppliers and contractors who already have the necessary equipment.
