The low-lying giant and the high-flying kite

Article Abstract:

The Atlantis space shuttle launched in August 1992 has the first Italian in space, Franco Malerba and a representative of the European Space Agency. The largest European satellite Eureca will be released to investigate microgravity and life science for ten months. Orbital dynamics will be examined by the first Tethered Satellite System (TSS-1) which will be reeled out of the shuttle on a wire and replaced in its housing. Deployment of TSS-1 involves challenging engineering techniques.

Hermes and Columbus crash before they fly

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency (ESA)dropped the Hermes project andthe Columbus free-flying platform but still studies related technology. The ESA wishes to find alternative means of near-Earth orbit and is discussing Mir station trips, a Euro-Russian space station and joint development of a space plane. Germany and Japan have joined the CIS to develop advanced space technologies. The UK space industry is limited to communications satellites and remote sensing.

Boost to the future?

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency has invested $7 billion and taken 10 years to develop the Ariane 5 launcher, which is soon to undertake its maiden flight. The success of this project will play a key role in the future of the European space industry over the next one-two decades. At present, the European Ariane 4 is the dominant launcher of satellites, but it is facing growing competition.
