The minister finds himself back on a sticky wicket
Article Abstract:
The UK government has not been guilty of failing to coordinate policy with regard to an academy of sporting excellence, according to Chris Smith, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. He states that the government's approach is designed to create the best possible conditions for all sports, with team games such as football and rugby set to receive funding from the National Lottery. The academy will offer academic and medical facilities which can be used by all sports, and will give British athletes all the facilities they require to excel in their sport.

Labour: no need or cash for the reforms
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has reacted critically to the UK government's latest plans for educational reform. It believes that there is no demand for selective education, a concept which is enshrined in a new White Paper on schools. The government plans to oblige schools to ask parents every year whether they wish the school to be selective. No school will have to become selective, but will be able to appeal if it is prevented from doing so by the local authority. The Labour party believes that this approach will do nothing to improve educational standards.

Labour's 2 billion pounds sterling plan to shut down hospitals
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed reactions to the announcement that a future Labour government in the UK would close or merge hospitals in areas where similar facilities operate on more than one site. This would bring savings of 2 billion pounds sterling which could be used to improve salaries for doctors and nurses and secure free dental checks. Some observers believe that cost savings would be minimal. Closing down hospitals is likely to be a very sensitive political issue.
