The people's college
Article Abstract:
More than 10 million people visited museums in the UK in 1994, and museums have become a significant part of the leisure industry. They continue to attract more visitors even though they do not have the extensive media coverage enjoyed by competing leisure activities, such as cinemas and football matches. However, some observers are questioning statistics about museum admissions, claiming that it is very difficult to compare figures for charging and non-charging museums accurately. The reasons for the increase in the popularity of museums are discussed.

What a gas!
Article Abstract:
Poet and researcher Humphry Davy became a celebrity when he made known the intoxicating powers of nitrous oxide in 1799. The practice of inhaling this substance was soon to be seen as dangerous and depraved, but nitrous oxide was taken up by creative entrepreneurs in the US. It later became established that nitrous oxide could play a valuable role in dentistry. It now seems appropriate to remember Davy as a visionary, regardless of attitudes to the use of drugs.
