The pill is still a girl's best friend

Article Abstract:

The recent warning from the UK government that certain brands of low-dose oral contraceptives are associated with a higher risk of blood clots than other types has revived concerns about the health risks associated with oral contraceptives. This may well prompt many women to stop taking these brands, and this in turn will lead to a rise in unwanted pregnancies and abortions. This is ironic, as the risk of developing a blood clot in pregnancy is in fact much greater than when taking any of the brands of oral contraceptives involved in the latest scare.

When breast screening is best

Article Abstract:

The recent resignation of cancer specialist Professor Michael Baum from the government's breast cancer screening advisory group has attracted considerable controversy, especially as he has made critical comments about the effectiveness of the breast cancer screening programme. Women feel particularly strongly about the issue of breast cancer, probably because the breasts are associated with many different emotions. It has therefore caused a stir that an expert on the subject has questioned current screening and treatment policies.

Mourners at the grave of trade unionism

Article Abstract:

The trade union movement in the UK has been declining, and the future of employment protection is expected to lie in new employee rights. The UK has less employment rights than other parts of Europe. Workers are going to have to see trade unionists more as professional people rather than as militants, as in the past, if the unions are to survive. Jack Dromey, National Secretary of the Transport and General Worker' Union, whose wife is the Labour shadow health spokesman, represents the new age of trade unionists.
