The red rash of romantics

Article Abstract:

Scarlet fever is now relatively uncommon in the UK, and this means that doctors may not recognize its early symptoms, which are similar to a sore throat. If antibiotics are not prescribed immediately, complications may arise. The main characteristics of scarlet fever, which is caused by a form of streptococcus, are a sore throat, a high temperature and a rough red rash. The sore throat appears first, followed within two days by a rash, beginning on the neck, chest and back and possibly spreading to the rest of the body. Treatment with an antibiotic usually prompts rapid recovery.

The brave new world of sexual relations

Article Abstract:

Modern reproductive technology will bring significant social changes in the 21st century as it becomes possible to completely separate sex from reproduction. This development will be the culmination of a search for totally reliable contraception that has gained growing momentum during the 20th century. Contraception technology has suffered from the requirement for users to retain their fertility in order to be able to reproduce later if they wish, but modern reproductive technology, involving storing sperm and eggs for later use, will make this requirement unnecessary.
