Scotland's big adventure

Article Abstract:

A new mood of self-confidence has emerged in Scotland. This is reflected in the fact that many Scottish football fans have travelled to Paris, France, for the 1998 World Cup wearing full Highland dress. The mood of self-confidence seems to stem from the devolution referendum in Sep 1997 and the strong vote in favour of a parliament in Edinburgh, Scotland. There is particular enthusiasm for Scottish independence among young Scots, who regard themselves as part of a world order.

Contraceptive with a surprise side-effect

Article Abstract:

The New York research organisation Population Council developed an intra-uterine device (IUD), LNG-20, which releases the hormone levonorgestrel (LNG). This type of progestogen reduces menstrual bleeding and may be suitable as hormone replacement therapy. It suppresses the lining of the womb and thickens cervical mucus. It protects against pelvic inflammatory disease, provides contraception and gives some relief from period pain.
