The slumbering hatreds of the English
Article Abstract:
There are 2 traditional myths about the English Civil War of 1640; that it led to a balanced constitution and that it was a 'bourgeois revolution' which opened the way to capitalism. Politician and historian Conrad Russell believes that: the demand that Charles I should take Council's advice had a constitutional basis; England's failure to sort out the relationship with Scotland resulted in a split country; the king's shortage of money due to parliamentary restrictions resulted in the government's collapse and that the Civil War was the last attempt to impose a single religion on the UK.

Should Lib and Lab lie down together?
Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that it is vital for the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats to cooperate more closely if the UK is to move towards a more open democracy and more efficient government. Neither party can afford to be seen to be deriving cheap political benefit from criticising the other. However, other observers feel that cross-party cooperation is important, but do not feel that the two parties can really form a coalition until the Labour party shows signs of developing some real policies.

Your tax cut is my pay cut
Article Abstract:
Tax cuts such as those made in the UK government's 1996 Budget tend to be popular with voters, but they are inevitably paid for in some other way. Most often, it is public services which suffer. The government seems to believe that voters like the idea of having a little more available money, but in fact many voters would be prepared to forego a tax cut if it meant that there was more money available for areas such as higher education and public transport.
