The tragedy of middle England

Article Abstract:

Middle schools, which take children from the age of eight or nine to 12 or 13, were once regarded a key element in the education system in certain parts of the UK. Their supporters believe that they are an ideal way of bridging the gap between junior and senior school, especially in terms of offering subject specialisms. However, their numbers are now declining, and it seems likely that middle schools will eventually die out altogether. This is particularly the case in areas where there are surplus school places.

Barred by law of the jungle

Article Abstract:

The number of students graduating in law from UK universities has expanded significantly over recent years. This has led to stronger competition for employment in the legal profession. There are considerable challenges associated with undergoing the professional training to become a barrister and then finding employment, and there are also problems with establishing a career as a solicitor. Further professional training must be undertaken, and there is no guarantee of a job once this has been completed.

Two thousand jobs lost ... and counting

Article Abstract:

Recent figures from the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) indicate that 2,000 teaching jobs have been cut so far as a result of problems with school budgets. Many more schools are having to cope with a budget deficit, and this will inevitably lead to more redundancies or early retirements among teachers. Schools are unable to make allowances for teachers falling ill, and many have had to increase class sizes.
