France is seeking to give its traditional sport of petanque, a form of bowls, a professional status. The 2001 petanque world championship brought together 3,000 teams from 13 countries, and it is hoped that petanque will also gain recognition as an Olympic sport.

French attitudes to tourists involve rudeness, according to surveys, and the novelist, Julian Barnes, argues that that the role of the French is to symbolise otherness in Europe. They should not change to please other nations, he argues. French people tend to be organized in established groups of family, clients and friends. Outsiders are treated badly, whether they are French or foreign, but foreigners who have established a relationship with French people are treated well.
