Article Abstract:

The cartoon character Andy Capp, created in 1957 by Reg Smythe, has proved extremely popular, being translated into 13 languages. The character has undergone some physical changes, but some elements have remained constant from the beginning. The themes of the cartoon strip, including avoiding work and drinking heavily, have also remained constant. In later years, some of the less politically correct elements in the cartoons, such as Andy Capp beating up his wife, were eliminated, bringing significant artistic loss.

Even icons need the breath of life

Article Abstract:

The Royal Academy in London, England, is staging an exhibition entitled 'The Art of Holy Russia: Icons from Moscow 1400-1600.' The icons initially seem quite familiar, as they contain motifs also found in early Italian art. However, on closer investigation they are actually very puzzling. Some can be very conceptual, while others have a much more human effect. The exhibition tends to obscure the various ways in which icons come from life.
