These desperate, dispossessed people on the edge of Europe are victims of a dirty war the West chooses to ignore

Article Abstract:

The Russian army is making large-scale artillery and air attacks on towns and villages in Chechnya, Russia. As a result, one-third of the Chechen population have left their homes. Around 193,000 have fled to Ingushetia, with a similar number having been driven out of their homes but unable to leave Chechnya because of the Russian blockade. The international media has given very little attention to the plight of the Chechens, in sharp contrast with detailed coverage of the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia.

'We Chechens have always had to fight - first Genghis Khan, now Boris Yeltsin.'

Article Abstract:

There has been great hardship and considerable violence in Chechnya, Russia, since the first Chechen war in 1994. The capital city, Grozny, was in ruins, and many people had only just enough money to purchase food. The Chechens resent the fact that the Russian government is seeking to portray them all as gangsters and terrorists. They seem resigned to their plight, emphasizing that the Chechens have always had to fight to survive.
