Think the unthinkable: think like a woman

Article Abstract:

The UK government is clearly finding it very difficult to produce effective and acceptable policies for women. In some cases, it is simply ignoring the needs of women, while in others its policies seem to actually go against women. This is reflected in the fact that it is believed to be considering abandoning independent taxation for women. Great emphasis has been placed on extensive investment in afterschool clubs for children, but in fact there are many working women for whom afterschool clubs will not be at all convenient or helpful. The new minimum wage is also unlikely to bring any real benefits to women.

A woman behaving badly

Article Abstract:

Feminist Germaine Greer has always been a very effective catalyst, sparking off extensive debate about the role of women in society. Her latest book, 'The Whole Woman,' will continue this trend, although it may not act as a catalyst for a younger generation, as she wishes. She seems to be angry with women for not pushing more assertively for social change, and does not take into account the differences that now exist between women. Feminism must now recognize that some of the most disadvantaged teenage girls have very few prospects, while childless professional women are overtaking their male counterparts.

Earning a wage is not the only way to escape poverty

Article Abstract:

It is possible to raise doubts about the UK government's emphasis on employment as the way of allowing families to escape poverty. In fact, poverty can only be tackled effectively through a balanced partnership between individuals, the government and employers. The government has so far been unwilling to force employers to play a role in reducing poverty. Access to work alone will not alleviate poverty, and more attention should be given to factors affecting the poor outside work, when they are acting as parents and carers.
