Article Abstract:

The Hulton Getty Picture Library was created around the photographs published in the magazine Hulton's National Weekly. The library now has a collection of 15 million photographs, stored in two extremely large warehouses in London, England. Photojournalism is the most vital element of the collection, and its most important single source is the Picture Post Archive. There are around 300 different collections within the library, including 80,000 glass-plate negatives of Hulton Getty's London Stereoscopic Co Archive.

Resilience shines through the rubble of Kobe

Article Abstract:

The recent earthquake in the region of Kobe, Japan, killed 5, 372 people and injured 26,815. 215,000 people are still living in shelters, and the elderly in particular are starting to be badly affected by discomfort and malnourishment. However, social workers report that people are generally adapting very well to the situation. Social barriers have been broken down as people work together to alleviate suffering, and shops and restaurants are offering special cheap prices.

Breaking through the vinyl frontier

Article Abstract:

The Moores Foundation, created by Peter Moores, son of the founder of the Littlewoods empire, has since 1964 been giving financial support to sound recordings of opera in English. A new Moores Foundation series with the Chandos label started in 1995. Recordings so far have included 'Tosca,' 'Cavalleria Rusticana,' 'Pagliacci' and 'Barber of Seville.' Most recordings have been conducted by David Parry, using either the Philharmonia or the London Philharmonic.
