Time for the Alma Mater to ask for a hand-out

Article Abstract:

UK universities are becoming increasingly aware of the need to adopt modern fundraising techniques if they are to have sufficient funds to continue operating. University College London, for example, has six full-time staff responsible for raising money from graduates, and has been particularly successful in targeting former students earning more than 100,000 pounds sterling a year. Durham University uses the Raiser's Edge database system to maintain contact with 56,000 graduates, while Manchester University has set up Concourse Enterprises, a trading organization.

Top-up fees - give us our freedom

Article Abstract:

The UK Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals supports the government's decision to implement a means-tested contribution of up to 1,000 pounds sterling to tuition fees. It is also in favour of provisions in the Teaching and Higher Education Bill to ensure that the government cannot raise the level of this contribution without extensive consultation. However, it is concerned about powers in the Bill to prevent universities charging top-up fees, as it feels that these go against the concept of university autonomy.
