Time to nurture those 'soft skills.' (graduates need to develop skills beyond academic qualifications)
Article Abstract:
Many graduates have very impressive academic qualifications, but are beginning to realize that they will not be really successful in a job unless they can show less tangible skills, such as communicating well with people and adapting to changing environments. Employers are looking for emotionally intelligent people who can be not only efficient managers but also inspiring leaders. Trends in modern society, such as children playing computer games rather than playing together outside, have tended to have a negative impact on the emotional intelligence of young people.

The taxman with his sights on a clear picture
Article Abstract:
No specific moves are being made to take a stricter line on tax avoidance by large companies in the UK, according to Richard Jones, head of the Inland Revenue's Large Groups Office. However, improved administration has meant that more companies have been obliged to pay the right amount of tax. The unit's main aim is to create better links between large companies and the Inland Revenue. It is estimated to have helped to bring an extra 4 billion pounds sterling to the Exchequer in 1994.

Will your results have the right vintage?
Article Abstract:
Employers of graduate students generally assume that those students who have attended the UK's older universities, especially Oxford and Cambridge, have high academic abilities. However, they may look to students from the newer universities if they are seeking non-academic skills, such as dealing with people. More and more employers are seeking people with the ability to pass exams, so this gives an advantage to students from the older universities.
