To play the queen

Article Abstract:

Actor and writer Antony Sher feels that he has now come to terms with who he is, having spent many years denying his sexuality, his Jewishness and the fact that he is a white South African because he did not want to be too closely associated with minority groups. He believes that all fiction is to a certain extent biographical, but does not feel that the relationship between Felix, the protagonist in his new novel 'The Feast,' and his goddaughter is based on a relationship in his own life. He feels that he would not be a good father because he is too self-absorbed and selfish.

Get thee to the provinces

Article Abstract:

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has for the last 35 years had two homes, one in London and one in Stratford-on-Avon. From 1996, it will operate only from Stratford-on-Avon, despite having previously claimed that it would never abandon London facilities, such as the Barbican. It will play throughout the year in Stratford-on-Avon, have an annual month-long residency in Newcastle, and set up two new residencies in other cities. This will bring its work to more people, according to artistic director Adrian Noble.

What Norman really means to the RA

Article Abstract:

Norman Rosenthal, exhibitions secretary of the Royal Academy, has attracted considerable controversy. Most recently, there has been an outcry about the 'Sensation' exhibition, which included a portrait of child murderer Myra Hindley. It is likely that he will receive a formal censure from the Royal Academy. Rosenthal, who has gained a reputation for speaking his mind, believes that he should bring the cutting edge of modern British art to a new audience.
