Tories aim for another 1.5m home-owners

Article Abstract:

The UK government's housing White Paper, entitled 'Our Future Homes,' which is due to be released soon, is thought to contain plans for creating a further 1.5 million home-owners over the next 10 years. Councils are likely to see their role as landlords reduced as a result, moving towards being 'enablers' instead. The private sector will be offered incentives to provide rented housing and manage council stock. However, there will be no help for existing home-owners.

So where will the tax cuts come from?

Article Abstract:

The UK government's spending policy has focused for the last two years on reducing public expenditure in order to allow taxes to be cut. Extensive reviews have been undertaken of expenditure in all government departments, but in practice few savings have been made, with the state having withdrawn completely from very few areas. It now seems that progress will only be made if the government is willing to risk moves which are extremely politically sensitive.

Power brokers go hunting on the left

Article Abstract:

All the UK's leading political lobbying firms are now keen to establish closer links with the Labour party, which has traditionally regarded lobbying very negatively. MPs are still unwilling to be associated too closely with lobbyists, but this is not the case with party workers and researchers. Lobbying firms are very keen to employ people with an inside knowledge of the Labour party.
