Tough-talking Yeltsin gambles his future
Article Abstract:
Russian president Boris Yeltsin's decision to send heavily-armed troops to recapture the around 100 hostages being held by Chechen rebels in the southern Russian village of Pervomayskoye may prove to have been ill-fated. He had stated that the troops would quickly end the hostage crisis, but this has not been the case. The fate of most of the hostages is still uncertain, and there remain many armed rebels loyal to Chechen leader General Dzhokhar Dudayev.
