Trade in endowments for planned returns
Article Abstract:
Second-hand endowment policies represent good value, with returns currently at around 10%. The original policy-holder has paid the heavy charges, and the new purchaser therefore gains the benefit of the policy. It is possible to plan for a range of eventualities within a fixed time structure by purchasing a succession of policies maturing at different times. Another option is to purchase into a with-profits investment trust. These funds purchase portfolios of second-hand with-profits endowments.

A calm hand for a troubled trade
Article Abstract:
The UK has one of the most developed insurance markets in the world, and insurance makes a key contribution to the country's economy, according to John Carter, chairman of the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The insurance industry sometimes has a poor image domestically, but in fact it is often envied by other European countries. The ABI must now deal with issues including the extension of a partnership between the state and the industry in supplying benefits to ordinary people.

Labour threatens end to Railtrack 'gravy train.' (Labour party warns that Railtrack shares will fall in value if it wins the next general election)
Article Abstract:
A future Labour government in the UK would oblige Railtrack to use the income from the sale of land to make infrastructure improvements, rather than to boost dividends to shareholders. This would mean that the many small investors who have recently purchase shares in Railtrack would not receive the yields which they had been expecting. The concern, which owns the railways' track and signalling network, now has shares held by more than 660,000 people.
