Trial revealed city's deadly underworld

Article Abstract:

Edinburgh Crown Office has a report into the deaths of Joe Hanlon and Robert Glover in Glasgow, Scotland, which were reputedly gangland killings. Paul Ferris was accused of murdering Arthur Thompson in Glasgow in August 1991 but he was found not guilty. The defence counsel Donald Findlay QC objected to the evidence of Dennis Woodman, a proven liar. The 54-day trial, which cost about 750,000 pounds sterling, provided a unique sensational description of the criminal world of rival gangs dealing in drugs and violence.

Scots united, English divided

Article Abstract:

The Labour party has revived debate on the issue of devolved rule for Scotland by putting forward plans for a Scottish Assembly. The party seems to be confident enough of winning the next general election to talk about dispensing and dispersing power throughout the UK, and its approach has encouraged renewed optimism in Scotland. In contrast, John Major has emphasised that the United Kingdom will not be broken up, believing that this view is supported by three quarters of the Scottish electorate.

Spooked out by deadly illusions

Article Abstract:

Author, journalist and historian John Costello, who died recently, was particularly well known as a conspiracy theorist. Many people regarded him as a difficult man to form a relationship with, and there has almost been a sense of relief at his death. The cause of his death remains unclear, fitting in well with his belief that appearances should not be seen as an indication of the truth.
